Where I live, the racing industry and the Amish are responsible for most of the "mediocre" unwanted horses you think are heading to slaughter: Throughbreds, Standardbreds, Belgians, Haflingers, you name it. Sugarcreek auction in Northern Ohio has always been a pipeline to the slaughter trucks -- good horses in bad times end up facing this pipeline. School horses, well-trained show horses neglected by ignorant owners, a bevy of loyal and good friends left homeless by divorce and ugly circumstances. Yes, horses are turned loose in national parks and empty land tracts, sometimes their owners tie them to trees to starve. I know that - but why not license horse owners and limit breeding. Race horse breeders breed 20 mares, hoping to get one winner. PMU plants breed constantly to get mare urine for hormone replacement pills/creams and the foals (and used -up mares) are the waste products of this vile industry. Yes, STOP THE BREEDING but don't just blame the backyard breeders.

AQHA, stance on horse slaughter is viewed, well my oponion is this, they the AQHA like the lottery breeding process, they the AQHA is much like the wallstreet group, we should not have to stop the way we are doing things since it benifits us. Lottery breeding is this, not exact, breed 100 keep 1, all of those 100 need to be registered, at what price do you pay to the AQHA, even if you get rid of the 99 you have still payed to "register" them, hence the AQHA makes money. If you are a mass breeder, those 99 also become a huge tax deduction. Again here we go, a group of people want to over induldge, and the rest of us pay the price. In this case the horses pay an even bigger prices, communties that have a slaughter plant pay a bigger price. Last but not least, do you really trust that at somepoint you will not end up with cross contamination of the meat plant, do you really want to risk your families health to support foreign companies or select group of people. Horse meat is tainted, with all kinds of drugs, heck do you not remember the cantelope this past summer? Our tax money needs to be spent on keep out food supply chain safe not opeing new doors to support overseas desires. It is you health they are risking. Go to the store, look a the meat, some of them say product of Canada or Mexico, are you sure beyond any doubt that there is not horse meat in that ground beef? Sure, sure enought to keep letting it happen?

Yeah - that was just the thing, Norm - it was never for me....it was always for you all. Just couldn't get more rescues on board. Most told me they were too busy to connect. What is sad about that is it is only through connection that we're going to be able to form a more powerful presence. Still - that project morphed into this blog and its new projects and the response is fantastic so I am ever hopeful. Good luck to you! And stay in touch!
